Doug Rozelle graduated from Compton High School in 1947, and the University of San Francisco in 1951 where he attended on a baseball scholarship. He worked his entire 35 year career in the Paramount School District as teacher, Athletic Director, Activities Director, Vice Principal, and finally as Principal for 11 years. He retired in 1988.
Veterans Pete Maloney, a second baseman, and John Dunne, a shortstop, will form the keystone combination. Sophomores Ed Rommel, Harold Sandell, and Doug Rozelle, a JCÂ transfer, will bolster it. Rommel and Sandell, both potentially fine hitters, will play third and first base, respectively. The outfield will consist of veterans Mike Scarpelli, John Vick, Dick Baptista and Joe Wozniak. Last year's frosh team will send Fats Johnston, Lou Marrietta, Tony Ragusa and Leonard Karp to bolster it. This group should give the outer garden some good hitting and fielding.
Mike Scarpelli, his third year with the club, will hold down his part of the field, and will also prove of great aid to the club at the plate. Gene Jacobs (the "Smile") is new to the squad, but looks like a good bet to move right in with the top boys. Lou Murietta and Tony Ragusa provide plenty of speed to the outfield spot. Doug Rozelle, "Olie" Olson, Stan Spiezer, and Bob Castagnetto round out the outfield crew. The team has a tough schedule ahead of them. Among their games are professional teams including the Seals, Oaks, Sacramento, and a couple of games with Yakima. They will play the Bay Area colleges, some of the southern, and valley schools (TheFoghorn).
