A four-run outburst by Loyola in the fifth inning enabled the Lions to give the Dons their second loss in league play. USF had pulled ahead in the top half of that inning on a double steal with Bill Downing scoring the run, but starter Bob Nolan and reliever Steve McNally could not contain Loyola. USF's second run was scored by Terry Senn, who tripled and scored on a throwing error. This week the Dons travel to Las Vegas for a three game series. They have to sweep all three games if they hope to defeat Santa Clara for the title.
The Hilltoppers, utilizing four pitchers, battled the University of San Diego nine to a 7-6 tenth inning victory. Steve McNally picked up his first win of the year in a one inning stint. The big inning for the Dons was the sixth as they scored four times utilizing the bats of Gary Senn, Bill Curran, and Bill Garcia. Deadlocked at the end or regulation play, McNally held San Diego in the top of the tenth, and then the Dons scored as Downing singled, advanced to second on an error by the center fielder, and then crossed home on a single by Bill Garcia (TheFoghorn).
