Several freshman have been called up from the Junior Varsity squad, and have responded positively to the challenge of Varsity baseball. Mike Mooney is now one of the top Don outfielders is one of these players. Since being called up to the Varsity, Mooney has played flawless baseball and driven in some key runs, as exemplified by the Don win over San Francisco State earlier this month, when his triple with the bags loaded produced the winning runs. Ken Huffman, likewise a freshman and a teammate of Mooney's at Crestimoor High in San Bruno, has displayed equal ability as starting pitcher for the Dons. Currently he maintains one of the lower earned run averages on the team. It was a busy weekend for the Diamond Dons last week. USF played a total of five games in three days but unfortunately, they came away winning only one, a split of the doubleheader. In the first game, freshman Ken Huffman hurled his first collegiate victory, going the distance and giving up six runs on 10 hits. Behind Huffman, the Dons racked up 15 runs on 15 hits, the main damage done by junior shortstop, Tom Lounibus. Lounibus collected four hits and three runs batted in.

The season may have ended for the Diamond Dons, but one award has not been announced. The Foghorn is proud to announce that freshman pitcher Ken Huffman has captured the 1977 Bubble-blowing championship, upsetting defending champ Mike Sears in the latter's final year of competition (TheFoghorn).
