Under the very capable coaching of Father Benjamin Sargent, the USF track team placed quite well in a warm-up performance against runners from College of Marin and Hartnell College. Although competing in an unofficial capacity, the ten Dons who made the trip to Marin county for the meet, performed admirably. Team captain Rich Garcia finished ahead of the rest of the field in the quarter mile (440 yards) with the time of 52.0 seconds — a fine time for such an early point in the season. Also, unofficially winning his respective event was Sophomore high hurdle sensation Terry Stempel who breezed the ten 36 inch barriers in 15 3 seconds, also a credible time this early In the season. Other notable performances were contributed by Mike Elwell in the 220. Elwell could come on to be the major USF power in the sprints along with Bob Smith in the two-mile run and Joe Dungan in the 880 and one mile. Newcomer Bob Sweeney took a few good jumps in the pole vault, and appears to be ready to vault quite well with more practice. Ken Wayland and Dan Maguire showed potential in the shot put and 440 respectively, and both could become point-winners for the Dons in the not too distant future (TheFoghorn).
