USF was mathematically eliminated from the WCAC Championship some time ago, but any spectator of last Friday's game with arch-rival Santa Clara would swear it was a fight for all the marbles. The Dons behind the seven hit pitching of Don ace. Jim Ross soundly defeated the Broncos, 7-3 in the fun and sun of Buck Shaw Stadium.
Jim Ross opened play Friday afternoon, returning to his brilliant form, scattering but six hits while striking out lour and issuing only one base on balls. But that base on balls followed bv consecutive Wave singles in the bottom ol the ninth inning gave Pepperdine the opener 2-1. The lone Don run came in the eighth with two outs and Pepperdine ahead 1-0. Fred Reid singled to left followed by a single to center by designated hitter Steve Armanino. Alter a pitching change, Dennis Yamamoto hit the run scoring single to centerfield. John Pacchetti followed the example of Ross on Saturday, pitching brilliantly but in vain against the strong Wave squad (TheFoghorn).
