The 1993 Cross Country season ended Saturday at the West Coast Conference Championship, held at Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, CA. The match was dominated on both the men's and women's sides by the University of Portland. The Pilots' victories marked the 15th straight title for the men's team and sixth in seven years for the women. The USF showing was highlighted by a seventh place finish by defending WCC champion Arpen Melwani in the woman's run to pace the women's overall sixth place finish. Melwani, a transfer junior from Saint Mary's, completed the 5 kilometer course one minute and 30 seconds behind the leader, Hilary Simmons of Portland. Actually, the women ended up running an additional 300 yards as a result of Simmons taking a wrong turn and guiding the rest of the runners away from the designated course. Sophomore Liz Hoffner was the next Lady Don to place, in the 28th spot. Other USF qualifiers included sophomore Pon Jahani, ten places later at24:59, Joy Schiltz (26:14), Margaret Fahl (27:12), Tiffany Breckenridge (28:08), and Kim Peterson (28:41) (TheFoghorn).
