The fifth inning was the best inning for the Dons. Jim Ross, who had struck out the last batter in the fourth, struck out the side, three men straight, to the wild applause of the 250 spectators present. In the bottom of the inning, Mike Giusti, who replaced Keating, grounded to first to open up. Malucchi walked, went to second on a wild pitch, and to third when Dave Bowes reached first on an error. Santora and Jones struck out to end the inning. The Trojans scored three more in the sixth on a single, a hit batsman and a towering home run over the left field fence. Ross recorded his fifth strike out and said that the home run pitch was the only bad one he threw all day. The inning ended peacefully (TheFoghorn).
