Bill McDonagh attended Sacred Heart High School and was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame for baseball. He then attended San Francisco City College, and the University of San Francisco from 1969 to 1972.
After college, he pursued a career as a building contractor. He was an active member of the Residential Builders Association, and a founding member of the United Irish Cultural Center that he helped build from the ground up in 1973. He was also a member of the Olympic Club, where he especially enjoyed taking "steams" and attending annual Father-Daughter dances (SFGate).
