USF just wouldn't play dead. Mike Laurel lead off the ninth with a walk, and Rick Stevens got on via an error. After Bill Hutson grounded out. advancing the runners, and Grant Steer struck out, catcher Fred Fegan doubled the two runs across for 9-8. This brought first baseman Ron Belli to the plate with the typing run at second base. Belli tied into Bob Aldrich's first offering and drove a twisting line shot deep to right center field, and it looked for a moment as if the Dons were right back in the ball game, but centerfielder Tom Beran came from nowhere to make the catch and the side was retired, and the game over. Laurel and Fegan each had two hits for the Dons (TheFoghorn).
