A 1970 graduate of USF, Phil comes to the Hilltop after coaching for two years at Bishop Diego High School in Santa Barbara where his teams compiled an overall mark of 45-15 and one Championship. While an undergraduate at USF, Stumpo was active in many realms of the athletic program including basketball Manager and baseball where he distinguished himself as a first-rate second sacker. Stumpo, 24, will assist Gaillard and Belluomini with the varsity and JV teams as well as with scouting and recruiting. In addition to his coaching duties, Phil has assumed the position of USF's first full-time Athletic Publicist (USFAthletics).

Coach Benedetti was enthusiastic in describing the desire put out by the players, citing as an example soph Phil Stumpo. Stumpo, as well as others, under the new program will have plenty of playing time, while eventually getting a Varsity shot during the season. According to Benedetti, the Dons have a solid chance at the first-ever WCAC baseball league title. All eight basketball members of the conference are entered in the race, with the teams divided into northern and southern divisions. Interestingly enough, USF is in the southern, along with co-favorites UC Santa Barbara and Pepperdine, and Loyola. Dons open with Stanford: nation's number one team (TheFoghorn).
