Certain members of the National Football League may be as interested in these three seniors as Coach Joe Kuharich is. Nine athletes "trained" for six weeks this summer in the Fort Bliss ROTC Camp. Included were footballers Dick Stanfel, George Carley, Lou Stephens and Jim Kearney; basketballers Phil Vukicevich, Walt Mehl and Bill Guttormsen; soccer player Walt Falconer; and javelin thrower John Gottsche (TheFoghorn).
Jim Kearney, a graceful All City man from St. Ignatius, graduated in Secondary Education in 1952. He played football, Intramural football, and ran track.Â
The middle distances are governed by the Kearney clan. Tom and Jim both cruise the 880, but Tom gallops the gruelling quarter mile without competition from his younger brother, but with Vern Jackson a standout from L.A. The two ex-prep stars from St. Ignatius High, Jim and Jack Kearney, are both slated for the 440 and 880.
