Big right-hander returns for final season after hard-luck USF career...the only 4-year USF player and one of only two Dons with 2 years or more on the USF squad (Bryan McCaffery)...will pitch in middle relief... tough when ahead on the count...a strong breaking ball pitcher with a lot of heart...nearly half of his career defeats have come by two runs of fewer... has received an average run support to just 3.2/gm in his 14 career decisions... twice named to the USF A. D.'s Academic Honor Roll.

AS A JUNIOR: Appeared in 25 games, 2nd among USF pitchers... 0-4 in 4 starts, with a 9.58 overall ERA...31K, 20 BB in 41.3 innings...2 shutout relief innings in 6-5 win at Hayward...an .857 fielder (1 po, 5 assist, 1 err).

AS A SOPHOMORE: Appeared in 16 games, 14 as a starter... 2 complete games vs. NCAA champ Pepperdine... those losses characterized his bad luck at the USF offense provided just 2 runs in each (2-3 loss at home, 2-5 extra-inning defeat in Malibu)...further irony in 8-9 loss to St. Mary's, which later forfeited for using an ineligible player (the "winning" pitcher)... 2-run losses to Cal (3-5) and USD (1-3), plus a 1-2 loss at SMC...only two losses were by more than 3 runs, with the USF offense providing an avg. of 2.9 runs per game (it averaged 4.2 for the season)...3rd on USF staff for innings (81.3), 4th in K's (30), 5th in ERA (5.53)...tied for team leading in WCC innings (56), 2nd for WCC K's (24), 3rd in WCC ERA (5.63), a .913 fielder (4 po.17 ast, 2 err).

AS A FRESHMAN: Threw in 17 games, with 3 starts and an 8.08 ERA... 33 K's (4th on team), 30 walks... first collegiate start cam eat Stanford...threw in 45-plus innings (5th on team)... impressive in starts vs. Hayward St. and UOP only to see USF go on to lose close decisions... against Hayward, racked up 9 K's through 4-plus innings and allowed just one run, USF lost 5-2...3 shutout innings in 7-1 USF win against the Pioneers.

PREP AND PERSONAL: All-star baseball and basketball player at Carmel High School... hit .454 and posted a 7-2 record as a senior...twice All-League... varsity "stopper" award twice... played on two-time League Champion...led Carmel to CCS finals as a junior, CCS playoffs as a senior... also captained Carmel to MTAL basketball title...All-League Honorable Mention for basketball as a junior... also pitched 5-0 record for Monterey County Palamino Champion Squad... played on Daly City Fog League Champion Team over the summer of '92 ... father, Augie Sr., played baseball for NCAA runner-up U. of Arizona and for 1963 U.S. team that toured South America... grandfather, Augie, played for the Cleveland Indians and the California Seals... born January 14, 1972 in Carmel... son of Augie and Cindy Acuña...Auugustine Guillermo Acuña, Jr.
