The winning goal for Chico came with just a minute and a half lo play in the game. "It wasn't a very good shot, Kathie (USF goalie, Kathie Schneider) had stopped some better shots earlier, but this one bounced off of her and another girl put it in. It was just bad luck," Visser says. Despite giving up the goal Visser is quick to point out that Schneider played well, slopping 20 of 22 shots on goal. The Dons lone goal came from the foot of Shanna Haines.

The game was tied at halftime, but the Dons could have held as large a lead as 3-1 if not for pure chance. The Gators Keady Phelan lofted a shot over the raised hands of Dons goalie Kathie Schneider just 1:25 into the game for a 1-0 lead. Moments later, however. Dons Shanna Haines nailed a direct kick from midfield that bounced off the cross bar of the goal on the tly. However, USF's goal came twelve minutes into the half. Haines passed to Ann Olsen, who drove toward the goal. Olsen and Gator goalie Lisa Hadley collided and fell when Hadley came out to challenge Olsen; the ball kept going and rolled into the net. Haines also hit a penalty kick that went directly into SF State's goal but Haines did not know that it had been an indirect kick, rather than direct, and because the ball touched no one before going in, the point was not allowed. At times, State seemed to be its own worst enemy. While chasing a clearing kick from Schneider, two State players collided violently at midfield and one, Cheryl Wilkins, was hurt badly enough to come out of the game. Several minutes later, another accident happened, this time without injury (TheFoghorn).
