    Men's Basketball (1988-1990)
Shawn Sykes was born in San Franciso, and attended Gunderson High School in San Jose. After two years at San Jose City College, he transferred to USF on a basketball scholarship.  He acquired the nickname Shooter from the father of a friend while playing in junior college.

"Another reason I came here is Coach Brovelli. I prefer a coach who doesn't yell — he doesn't yell that much - he just talks through it and points out the bad aspects and the good aspects. I remember coming up to USF to watch a couple games and I saw the way he was coaching, and he was so calm, even when they were behind, and he didn't yell. When he does yell he doesn't do it in front of everyone. He might do it in front of your teammates, but he doesn't do in front of the crowd to embarrass you. He might yell at you at halftime down in the locker room but he's...just laid back, and he gets the job done (USFFoghorn)."

Sykes graduated in 1991 with a Bachelors in Sociology and started Step by Step to teach basketball to young players in 2014, in Brisbane, CA.
