John Leahy graduated in 1949 in Physics. He was a native of San Francisco, and a member of the Math Club. He served in the U.S. Army.

John Joseph Leahy was born on December 3, 1926 in San Francisco, to County Cork, Ireland natives Timothy and Mary (Casey) Leahy. He grew up in Noe Valley and attended St. James Grammar School and graduated from St. James High School (1944). After completing his WWII enlistment he attended USF, earning a Bachelor's. Graduate studies at UC Berkeley followed, where he completed his PhD. in Physics. Leahy accepted a post- doctorate position at Carnegie Institute of Washington. The following year he took a research position at City of Hope, the Southern California biomedical research and treatment center. In 1963, he settled in Danville and worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He retired in 1992 after twenty years with the City and County of San Francisco (SFChronicle).
