Pat Clardy was a graduate of McClymonds High School in Oakland, where he earned Street and Smith's All-American honors in basketball. Clardy, a 6-foot-9 forward, averaged 21 points and 17 rebounds as a senior at McClymonds in 1983.

He began his college career at Cal State Fullerton, then went to Contra Costa Community College before playing at USF in 1986-1987 and 1987-1988, averaging 12.5 points per game with the Dons. Clardy hit the game-winning shot when USF upset Cal 65-63 in 1986. Two games later, he scored 41 points against Northern Montana.
He was USF’s leading scorer his junior season on the Hilltop, averaging 13.3 points in 1986-1987 — just the second year after USF resurrected its basketball program.

“I was very fortunate to have a player of his caliber and ability when we were bringing the program back at USF,” former coach Jim Brovelli said. “He was a high-quality player, a very personable kid who cared about people. He was just a good guy. I was very, very lucky to have him (East Bay Times).”
