A Vietnam veteran, Harmon joined the Alameda District Attorney's office in 1974 after graduating from the University of San Francisco School of Law. While at USF law school, he was a member of the rugby team. While he relishes trial work, his first passion is his family. Every weekend, he takes his three young children to a local swimming pool, armed with towels and a cooler full of lunches.

Harmon is also a fitness fanatic who works out daily at the gym and spends his lunch hour doing a couple of quick laps around Lake Merritt, next to the Oakland courthouse. During his stint in the O.J. Simpson trial, he managed to squeeze in a morning run before his day in the courtroom. A prosecutor for 20 years, Harmon has spent the past eight specializing in the use of DNA as evidence in the courtroom, and has established himself as one of the leading experts in the field. Under a special arrangement, the Alameda County prosecutor is on loan to the Los Angeles district attorney's office (SFGate).

He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1967 and served four years active duty.  He served a combat tour in Vietnam as Officer in Charge of a Navy Swift Boat and received the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.  After his military service he attended the University of San Francisco School of Law and graduated in 1974.  He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and is currently employed as a consultant to numerous law enforcement agencies dealing with such issues as cold case investigation and other issues related to forensic DNA typing.  He is currently an Instructor at U.C. Davis in the Master's in Forensic Science program.  He retired in 2007 after a 33 year career as a Senior Deputy District Attorney for Alameda County, California (ISHINews).
