Howard Smith was born in El Paso, TX, and played forward for the Dons basketball team. At 6' 9", 219 lbs., he was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the 9th Round of the 1976 NBA Draft.
The Don JV team made the night complete with an 81-59 rout of the Stanford JV team. Paced by super-frosh Richard Johnson and Howard Smith, the Dons were able to hit twenty- seven field goals as compared to only eighteen for Stanford. Johnson hit eight field goals and eight free throws for 24 points along with 13 rebounds. The 6' 9" Smith scored 21 points and 13 rebounds. Guard John Curran, a Riordan High product, chipped in with 14 points.
Las Vegas' Bob Florence, ard Johnson and Howard Smith to play varsity ball, Loyola's yearling sensation, Luther Philyaw, the CIF's AA Player of the Year representing Daniel Murphy High School last year, could be a tremendous threat if he enters the varsity ranks.
There you have it. In case you were not one of the lucky 100 people to get a ticket for tomorrow game, don't fret. The game will be televised locally beginning at 12:30 P.M. We do not have to tell you that tomorrow's game is very important. You can be sure that the Dons will be ready. The Don scoring attack is again very well balanced. The play of freshman Howard Smith has been impressive. Howard has had to step into some tight situations, especially against Nevada Las Vegas, and has performed well (TheFoghorn).
