John Micklewright, was born on July 9, 1943 in the county of Essex, east of London, England.

Micklewright attended USF on a soccer scholarship and played midfield on the USF Men's Soccer Team from 1971 to 1974. The Dons opened the 1973 season with six straight wins and finished the West Coast Intercollegiate Soccer Conference with a perfect slate at 7-0-0 for the Championship. In fact, the only teams in WCISC competition to stay within two goals of USF were San Jose State who fell 4-3 to the Dons, and Santa Clara who lost 3-1.

At USF, John Micklewright was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu. He graduated with a Bachelor's in Psychology in 1974, and received the Charles Harney Award, which honors athletes with high academic achievement. Following graduation, he was an Assistant Soccer Coach at USF under Steve Negoesco. In 1975, the Dons won both the NCAA and the West Coast Intercollegiate Conference Championships and in 1976, the NCAA.

Prior to attending USF, Micklewright was the top scorer for the San Francisco Buccaneers in the Northern California Soccer League (NASL). After graduation in 1974, he was recruited by the San Antonio Thunder in the NASL and later played with the Utah Golden Spikers of the American Soccer League (ASL). He also attended the National Amateur and National Open Cup competitions. Micklewright was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1991, and a few years later, into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. He also served on the USF Hall of Fame Committee for many years.
