The implicit jinx that was fresh upon the minds of all returning players, especially the two lone seniors Ric Olivas and Jim Spagnole, led the Dons to play somewhat too carefully. The result was that Stanford had a precious 1-0 advantage at half-time. The Dons couldn't even "buy" a goal until late in the third quarter when Rangel and Hites caught fire for two quick goals.

Leading the field is no one but Jim Spagnole. "Spags" had the job of doubling as both soccer player, and writer, and gave the Foghorn sports the most complete coverage of soccer ever. After games he could be found typing away at one of the office typewriters trying to make his deadline (TheFoghorn).

Spagnole was a native of Seattle and graduated in English. He played soccer all four years, was a member of the Block Club, St. Ive's Society, the Foghorn staff, and the Student Council.
