1986 on the Hilltop was one of those special years, memorable for outstanding players and team spirit. Defensive backs Ken Boardman and John Doyle were named All-Americans, 2nd team and goalie Mark Powell tied the single season NCAA record with 17 shutouts, recording 97 saves and an incredible 0.28 goals against average.
Seniors Tor Sveen and Theo Narvestad finished their careers with 90 points and 81 points respectively, with Sveen scoring 33 goals with 24 assists and Narvestad adding 28 goals and 25 assists. Team defense was the notable mark of the 1986 team as Doyle was virtually unbeatable in the air, and defender Alan Bailey became well known for his rock hard tackles and tenacious one-on-one defense. Â In fact, the Dons led the nation allowing the fewest goals of any NCAA team, only allowing seven in 24 games.
Highlights included wins over Stanford (3-1), Santa Clara (1-0), St. Mary’s (3-0) and San Jose State (5-0). At one point in the middle portion of the season, The Dons put together a 13 game unbeaten streak that saw them go 11-0-2 over that span, outscoring their foes 33-4 with nine shutouts.
