In the pitching department, the Dons are looking good. With senior Jim Ross and the other three starting pitchers: juniors Jim Leoni and John Pachetti, and sophomore Dennis Collier.
The Dons loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on three walks, but with two out, Tom Warner struck out to end it. Dennis Collier took the mound for the Dons in the seventh and retired three straight Trojans on two fly balls and a strike out. Bob Bechtel got the Dons third hit in the bottom of the inning. Lunes got on base safely, but two strike outs and a fly to left ended the threat. The fans in attendance hoped that the game was a seven inning affair and over, but the Dons surprised everyone by playing a full nine. The Trojans scored two runs in the eighth on a combination of two singles, a strike out (recorded by Cal Godward, the Don pitcher) a fly to left, and two more singles. The Dons sent three up and three down in the bottom of the eighth.
Very notable however was the outstanding performance of right-hander Dennis Collier, who retired 17 straight UOP batters in relief. Beginning in the fourth, Collier ended the Tiger rally forcing a ground-out and strikeout and in the fifth struck out the side (TheFoghorn).
