Copping all six singles matches, the USF Don netsmen blew the St. Mary's Gaels off their Moraga courts, 8-1, for their first victory this season. John Carpenter opened the rout with a 7-5, 6-4, sweep over Gael ace George Chu. Al Barrett followed with a whitewashing of SM's Mark Dubois 6-3, 6-2, and Greg Vervais handled his opponent in like fashion, 6-4, 6-4. Bob Futernick (6-2, 6-1), Williams (6-2, 6-0) and Dave Rychel (6-1, 4-6, 7-5) then ran the consecutive set string to eleven, before the Moragamen could take a set (TheFoghorn).

The 1968 season was a promising one for Coach McGlynn's tennis team. Facing a schedule of WCAC competition contests with Stanford, Oregon State, SF State, and Cal State Hayward, the Dons were optimistic about their chances. The first four spots on the team were held by Rich Williams, Al Barrett, John Carpenter, and Bob Futernick, Greg Vervais, Dave Rychel, Walt Stone, and Tony Lau fought for the remaining two posts. With the entire team returning from last year, the Don netters had perhaps the most balance and depth of any team in the WCAC, and because of this, the league title was well within their reach (TheDon).
