Both goalkeepers. Aram Kardzair and Andre Schweitzer, have done solid jobs for San Francisco in the nets, but the real key to USFs stinginess has been the addition of freshman Eric Nielsen who has more than filled the gaping hole at sweeper. Nielsen's play so far has given every indication that he could be USFs next soccer superstar. Also. USFs halfbacks Eric Visser, Jo Bergsvand and Jan Elberse have done fine jobs on defense. The Dons also got lifts from fullbacks Vidar Larsen and John Alexander, who are filling in while senior Nick Lambridis nurses a sore ankle.

The defense's statistics become even more remarkable when the number of injuries is taken into consideration. Jo Bergsvand was starting at left halfback until the injury to Van Straatum moved him up into thc midfield. There was no doubt about Jan Elberse's ability to fill in, but then Nick Lambridis was forced to miss eight games with an ankle injury. However Coach Negoesco was able to go to the bench and get fine performances from Vidar Larsen and John Alexander. USF's defensive depth was not more vividly illustrated than in the final game against Fresno State. Erik Nielson had to miss the game because of a broken toe suffered against Santa Clara and his spot was taken by John Alexander. Then early in the contest, left halfback Eric Visser collided with a Fresno State player and left the game with a concussion and a severe gash in his forehead. Coach Negoesco brought freshman Mark Mack came off the bench, and he and Alexander played extremely well against Fresno, helping shut off the fired up Bulldogs who had taken an early 1-0 lead (TheFoghorn).
