Leonard John Heinz was born to Irene Elizabeth (Donovan) Heinz and Leonard Vincent Heinz on December 27, 1932, in Novato, CA. His family eventually settled in San Francisco, where Len attended Most Holy Redeemer grammar school, Saint Ignatius High School, and University of San Francisco. He graduated in English in 1954, and earned his Teaching Credential in 1955. He was a member of the Sodality Club and the Sanctuary Society. He played three sports at USF in addition to Intramural Football: baseball, soccer and was a member of the rifle team. He was also a member of the Foghorn staff. 

After USF, he served in the U.S. Army 1955-1957, then continued to serve in the Army Reserve, where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1993. 
From 1962 until 1992, Len taught English and Literature at Riordan High School, served as Dean, and was Principal of the summer school program for many years. He also coached the freshman and JV baseball teams.

Len was active in his community. He led many volunteer efforts at Epiphany, Riordan, the Outer Mission and in later years in El Dorado County. He was a leader in the Boy Scouts, coached youth baseball, was active in neighborhood groups, participated in school parent clubs, and even campaigned for supervisor in San Francisco (SFChronicle).
