Phil Coates graduated from USF in 1990 with a Degree in Sports Administration and played soccer for the Dons from 1986 to 1990. He currently is the owner of Roofing Rain or Shine in Portland, OR.

During the Met Life Classic, in one of his many head-to-head contests against the opposing goalkeepers, Marco Luchetta lost this time as the goalie made a catlike pounce on the ball. The Dons eventually won 1-0 on a goal by Tim McEnery, when with a minute and I5 seconds to go, Bjorn Schonbeck and Ola Henmo snuck through the Gator defense. A quick pass by Henmo to Schonbeck sealed the Gator demise. Dons goalie Phil Coates is a notable standout on the team, with four shutouts to his credit so far this year. Coates believes the Dons have had to make a series of adjustments depending on the presence or absence of All-American John Doyle, currently in Trinidad for two weeks with the U.S. National team. "When John is not with us, we have to play with a great deal more intensity to compensate for his absence," he said. "When he's back," said Coates, "we're just that much more versatile (TheFoghorn)."
