Hernan Mesones was a native of Chiclayo, Peru and played soccer his junior and senior years. He graduated with a Bachelor's in Production Management and was awarded First Team All-Western Conference in 1965.
The offensive unit still is seeking the proper combination, and yet they are scoring effectively under any condition which attests to the abundance of powerful talent the Dons have. Kudos of the week must go to the defensive players as they all but ran the Gators off the field. Hernon Mesones combined with the two halfbacks to control and direct all the play in the middle of the field, while the two full backs, Pat Presentin and Jim Spagnole, controlled all play to the outside and down the length of the field. The halfbacks set up all the offensive-defensive switch plays and did a tremendous job of keeping the pressure on the Gator defense throughout the game. It was a total defensive success that is readily attested to by the show the Don goalie had time to put on for the fans.
Sanlor Nights played a superb game at center forward and broke through to force the San Jose goalie towards a very busy day. It was one of these breakthroughs with three men on him that enabled him to pick up a foul inside the penalty area. As a result, Ric Olivas powered a beautifully placed penalty past the useless efforts of the goalie. USF's goalie, Fred Shanzad was severely kicked early in the second quarter but by sheer will finished the game to the amazement and admiration of all present. Henry Lopez-Contreras and Hermon Mesones were the defensive standouts in this game (TheFoghorn).
