Joe Morello graduated with a Bachelors in Physical Education and a Masters in Education. He played baseball for the Dons for one season. He currently works as a Vice President in Administrative Services at Skyline College.
Very simply, it was the only unforgettable occurrence in an otherwise very forgettable fortnight for the Diamond Dons. "The Great Joe Morello Snafu", a story soon to nationwide, left all in stiches including Coach Ken Bowman. Morello was pitching in the eighth inning against Stanford, who had already staked a 12-6 lead. With runners on second and third. Coach Ken Bowman called for Morello to intentionally walk the Cardinal's Frank Carey. He couldn't. "I was really trying to walk him." said an apologetic Morello. ''I was trying to throw it real lazy and loft it in." Lazily, he threw a strike. Catcher Eric Enos has already snuck up for the outside pitch and to reach back to get the ball. He then ran out to Morello to make sure they were both on the same page. In the dugout Bowman made his intentions know again. Read my lips. Second pitch. Strike two. Bedlam. "I will never forget the expressions on people's faces. Our dugout exploded in laughter," said Morello. "Lou Bevilacquo had tears in his eyes. Joe Willie ran behind the dugout cracking up. Bowman just was shaking his head in his hands. It looked liked everybody got a shot of novocaine. Their jaws just dropped." "It seems like we have some of the goofiest things happen here — this could only happen at USF," said a temporarily crestfallen Bowman. Only at USF. Bowman then let Morello pitch to Carey and two pitches later he delivered a well-hit two run double to right-center (TheFoghorn).
