Tim Fitzpatrick transferred to USF from Santa Clara University and played third base for the Dons. He graduated in 1984.
Led by the hitting of Dave Sheldon and Tim Fitzpatrick, the Dons took a 5-2 lead into the eighth inning of the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Sheldon drilled a third inning home run and Fitzpatrick had two hits, including a long bases loaded double. Bob Reed pitched well for 6 2/3 innings and was relieved by George Canto in the seventh. Everything turned gloomy in the eighth when Fresno scored four runs to take a 6-5 lead. It looked as if the big inning bug had bit the Dons again. But it was not to happen that way in this game. After Joe McSweeney had walked in the bottom of the ninth, center fielder Dino Nomicos came up with his biggest hit of the year. Normally a contact hitter, Nomicos came through with a home run over the left field fence and USF won 7-6.
In the infield. Christ Kroener and Mike Madsen have played well up the middle defensively, and Tim Fitzpatrick has done a fine job at third base. Fitzpatrick was named as a candidate for Academic All-American. Freshman Rich Morales took over the starting role as catcher and did an outstanding job (TheFoghorn).
