Matt Shaukowitch attended Junipero Serra High School, and USF from 1994 to 1996.  He played baseball for two seasons for the Dons and completed his Bachelor's at College of San Mateo and Upper Iowa University.  He earned a Master's at Notre Dame de Namur and is currently a teacher in South San Francisco.

The Dons had hoped that lefty transfer John Middleton would be able to accept the burden of being the primary middle reliever this season. But with Middleton out with a health condition, Hill expects others to step up and fill that role. Matt Shaukowitch, a freshman from the peninsula's Serra HS, is a left-hander who may pick up some of those innings. "His fastball's got good movement, and his breaking ball is one of the best on our staff," commented Hill.

And that's about the story of this one, as freshman starter Sean Buller pitched just the first inning, a pre-planned move by Hill to spread the work around his overworked pitching staff. Buller just missed the fireworks, as Jason Blakely relieved him to start the second inning. Blakely gave way to Matt Shaukowitch, who gave way to Keith Halcovich, and his 15 consecutive balls, who gave way to David Bernhard, who narrowly got the Dons out of the third before Hill burst an artery. "Someone needs to emerge [from the bullpen] as kind of a stopper," Hill reflected later. "We knew we were strapped [for pitching], so we were going to throw everybody. We had a couple breakdowns, and it ended up costing us (TheFoghorn)."
