USF's golf team ended its 1976 campaign last week with a fifth place finish in the WCAC Championship tournament held here in San Francisco at the Olympic Club. The Dons placed behind Seattle, once again the champ, and three other WCAC schools despite the fact that USF has no golf scholarships unlike those that finished ahead of them. Tony Michaelis led the Don attack stroking to a 164 finish with Bob Spering and Bob Cerri close behind at 168. Earlier in the month, Jack Shedd's 79, 78, and 81 paced the Golfing Dons to a 9th place finish in the Silverado Tournament in Napa.
Looking for possible top ten finishes will be Bob Cerci, Sito Ugarte, Tony Michaelis and Mark Berkhaus. According to Shedd, Cerci has been working hard on his game and is playing well enough to earn a top ten spot. Ugarte, the Manila city champion, has progressed strongly. "Sito has gained a lot of experience over the season which should help him in the league tourney," Shedd commented. The team's sleeper could be Tony Michaelis. "Look for a surprise finish from Tony. His game is coming around and with a little luck and control of his emotions, Tony could finish right up there (near the top)," observed Shedd. The most determined golfer is Berkhaus. According to Shedd, Berkhaus' gutsy play earned him the Most Inspirational Award for the season (TheFoghorn).
