Roy George Reitz was born on November 7, 1941 in San Francisco. He attended USF and played for the Dons as an outfielder and first baseman. At 6’, 185 lbs., he threw and batted left-handed. His rookie year, Reitz made 360 appearances at the plate, had a .378 batting average, and recorded 31 hits in the 1962-1963 season.

After USF, in 1963, he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants, but played in the minor leagues for four seasons. With the Decatur Commodores in single-A, as an Outfielder, he had a .280 batting average, 26 hits, 70 runs and 14 doubles. At the age of 22, he returned to California to play for the Fresno Giants in single-A. During his three years with them, he had a total of 361 hits, 220 runs, 157 RBIs, and 56 doubles. The 1966 season was his career-best: he recorded 140 hits, 89 runs, 65 RBIs and 7 stolen bases while batting an average of .330.
