William James N. Garcia was born in 1948 in Hawaii. He attended USF, where he played baseball for the Dons. He graduated from USF with a Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts in 1971, and received a Master’s in Government in 1976. He went on to practice law in Kamuela, HI. He was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1990.
Under coaches Dana Hendershott and Bill Garcia, both subbing for chief mentor Dante Benedetti, the Dons have played, so far. to a .500 record.
Offensively, the Dons exploded for four big runs in the first on two big home- run shots by second sacker Terry Senn and first baseman Bill Curran. The fourth inning saw three triples, by Tad Tassone, Terry Senn and Bill Garcia, while Steve Giannecchini singled accounting, all told, for a big 3 run frame. The Dons also picked up a run in the third, seventh and eight innings accounting for the final score. Terry Senn was the day's big stick along with Bill Garcia. Senn was three for four accounting for 8 total bases on the three hits. Garcia was 2 for 2 tripling, singling and walking twice. USF 5, 7, Pepperdine 1,1. The Dons completed the destruction of Pepperdine by sweeping the April 3rd doubleheader from the Waves. Hurlers Mike Redling and Bob Nolan yielded but one run a piece, each going the distance. Redling fanned five while Nolan wiffed eight. In the opener, the Dons got all the runs they needed in the third as the swift Tassone walked and Larry Jones, Terry Senn and Bill Garcia each followed with singles accounting for 3 runs. In the nightcap, the Dons exploded for a 5 run rally with two out in the first inning. Senn walked, stole second and scored on a single by Garcia. Garcia then stole second and scored on a single by first sacker Bill Curran. Shortstop Bill Downing walked, Mike Buskey singled and Randy Zanze tripled in the final runs of the inning. Scoring two more times, the Dons finished off Pepperdine 7-1 (TheFoghorn).
