William Charles Courtney II

  • Class
    1964
  • Honors
    Baseball (1961-1964)

William Courtney graduated in Industrial Relations; he was a member of the Block Club, the Residents Council, and the 2-A Club. He was a native of Visalia, CA.

Bill Courtney, from the College of the Sequoias in California, is a catcher with a fine arm, and no stranger to the duties behind the plate (TheDon).

With the season just a few season weeks old, George McGlynn's nine are unwinding and preparing for the task ahead. Thus far, the team holds a 2-5 record with many of the losses decided by a run or two. With a 23-game slate yet to play, the situation could very well change for the better, as the starting line-up would seem to indicate. Playing the first sack is a junior college transfer from San Mateo, Roy Reitz, a junior. Although this is Roy's first year on the varsity, action so far indicates that he is a good hitter and a very good fielder. On second is the lead-off hitter John Alaura, senior. A good fielder and hitter, John has proven that he was made the lead-off batter for a reason. At shortstop is a transfer from St. Mary's College, Jack Bareilles, junior. Dons will be hearing of him as the season progresses, for it seems that Jack specializes in double-plays. Holding down a tough spot is third-sacker Lou Zuardo, sophomore. Possessing a strong arm, Lou has done a good job at that spot. Lou has also been acknowledged the team leader. Playing outfield is Bill Gallagher, senior. For his size, 6'6", Bill is fast, robbing many an opponent of a hit. Bill in games-to-date is leading hitting, and all signs indicate he will continue to shatter the opposition's dream of a no-hitter. Also in outfield is senior Al Souza. Now that Al is back is improving, Dons will see more of last year's leading hitter. Another fast runner and good hitter is sophomore Huey Thomas, a transfer from Los Angeles Junior College. Huey joins Bill Gallagher and Al Souza in the outfield. Behind the plate can be found either Bill Courtney or Ken Bogden, both sophomores. Thus far, both have been equally sharing the responsibility (TheFoghorn).
