The Dons improved their play in the second game, a seven inning affair as they shut out the Reno team on a four hitter by Dave Weidinger. Weidinger, a senior, masterfully controlled the Reno batsmen while his teammates were belting out three runs on seven hits. Weidinger's battery mate, catcher Kevin Keating of St. Ignatius fame, hit a home run over the left field fence in the fourth. The split gave the Dons a 2-1 series victory and brought their league record to 2-5.

Pitcher Dave Weidinger allowed merely four hits to Hayward State as the USF baseball Dons clipped Hayward 4-3 last Friday at Ulrich Field. Weidinger constantly fought his way out of pressure situations to stop the Hayward club. Despite never allowing more than one hit in any inning, Weidinger was often facing trouble due to seven errors committed by the USF defense. Meanwhile the Dons were taking advantage of the five errors committed by Hayward. Three errors by Hayward in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed the Dons to win the game.

Barrow and halfback Tim Gavin, have already won their starting assignments again. Standing out in the offensive line is an All-FWC guard Chris Davis, at 210 lbs. with terrific speed and blocking strength. The Gators hope to make their halfback sweeps more of a threat this season. In addition to Davis are hopeful sophomores Chris Callero and Dave Weidinger. They will play tackle to Jim Deely's center position. While first games of the season usually find the defensive units best prepared, the upcoming opener between USF and San Francisco State promises to become largely a test of which offensive unit has matured the most. Both the Dons and the Gators will look to the win (TheFoghorn).
