Bill Mallen played three seasons of basketball at USF from 1955 to 1958. He was a member of USF’s 1956 NCAA Championship team and 1957 Final Four squad. He was named All-City player at St. Ignatius High School in 1953. He graduated with a Bachelor's in English at USF and then attended USF’s School of Law. He served in San Francisco’s District Attorney’s office and was appointed a Municipal Judge in 1982.
Returning to competition, after playing on the Don frosh squads two years ago, are Gene Brown, 6-3 All-City forward from San Francisco's George Washington High, and Bill Mallen, 6-3, 230 pound All-City forward from the 1953 St. Ignatius High squad which won the Northern California Championship. Bill Mallen is a key figure in Coach Phil's plans. He is a player who has spirit, and is an ace in the hole.
A small jolt was given the University of San Francisco Basketball Kingdom as one of its better subjects, 250 lb. forward Bill Mallen, turned to concentrate on studies. Mallen, who was the team's seventh highest scorer and the third forward, had amassed 46 points in eleven games. Mallen gave no comment when asked about his withdrawal from the National Championship Dons (TheFoghorn).
