Major: Architectural Design
Hometown: Elk Grove, CA
Career Highlights: Third best free throw percentage in NorPac Conference as a senior in 1985, career high 16 rebounds versus Cal Berkeley.
Biography: Bacon came to USF by way of Novato High School where she earned numerous all-league honors, and then played at the College of Marin where she was named the MVP of the Camino Norté League. After graduating from College of Marin with an AS degree, she was recruited by five different universities, but ultimately chose USF. Her friend and high school teammate, USF Hall of Famer Sue Corder, convinced Bacon to join forces with her and rule the NorPac Conference as fellow USF Dons.
Known for her defensive prowess she thoroughly frustrated USC star player Cheryl Miller in a game against the Trojans, taking the future Olympian out of her rhythm and drawing two offensive charge fouls by Miller. A versatile athlete, Bacon helped out the short-handed USF volleyball team in 1984 and 1985.
Why Bacon Chose USF: “Athletically, because they had a solid basketball program with a good reputation - aka ‘The House Mary Hile built.’ Academically, because they had a unique co-operative bachelors degree program with the Academy of Art University. I got the best of USF's general liberal arts and my major classes at the Academy of Art.”
Favorite USF Memories: “The team became my family away from home and some of the best times were celebrating after the game with pizza at The Front Room on Clement Street, and the team dinners at New Pisa (Dante Benedetti's restaurant in North Beach).”
The USF Student-Athlete Experience: “Proving the dumb jock stereotypes are wrong, the majority of my teammates were honor students and our overall team GPA was 3.8. I was able to build lifelong relationships with my teammates.”
Life After USF: After graduation Bacon had an offer to play professional basketball in Sweden but ultimately chose to stay in the U.S. and join the work world. Bacon has been with PG&E for 30 years in a number of capacities but most recently in the materials supply chain and logistics. Her son Andrew inspires and challenges her to stay in shape. She enjoys the mountains, biking, hiking, my dog and (drawing) perspective architectural renderings. Bacon supports various charities; St Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Sacramento Food Bank, Sacramento ASPCA, Firefighters Burn Institute, Wounded Warrior Project and of course USF Women's Basketball.
