John Bustos has been coaching and playing soccer for over 30 years. He has a wide breadth of competitive coaching experience having coached at Placer United, Capital Valley United, San Juan, Atlas Academy and Juventus Soccer Club. His Atlas Academy U11 Girls team ranked 6th nationally and were champions or finalists in 9 of 12 Premier level tournaments. 7 of those players are now playing D1 of D2 collegiate level with one of those players receiving a full scholarship to play at Harvard University. At Placer United, John coached the entire U11 pool of boys, all 3 teams with two of those teams playing Premier level simultaneously and the Copa team winning the Norcal Premier League championship. A vast majority of his premier level players the following year were selected to US Academy teams.

John was a scholarship player for the University of San Francisco (USF) a 6-time Division 1 National Champion program. He played under the legendary coach Steve Neguesco, and alongside teammate John Doyle who went on to captain the US National Team at the World Cup in Italy and captain then subsequently be GM of the MLS San Jose Earthquakes for many years. His teams made a Final Four appearance and won two WCAC titles. In his senior year John received the highest honors on the team, selected as West Coast Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year among 8 Universities in the Conference and among all athletes in all sports, The Gus Donahue Award for Team Leadership selected by teammates and coaches, the Charles L. Harney Award, to the university wide award to the stand-out Student-Athlete who maintained the highest GPA.
