The biggest surprise of the game was Jack Beggs' outstanding play at second base. Taking over that position for the first time, Beggs came up with three sensational fielding gems which robbed San Jose batsmen of sure hits. The rest of the infield was also impregnable, Mel Reid and Andre Chiccourat coming through in the pinch with great defensive play. The outfield, manned by Ed Foley, Marv Mosconi, Armand Quartini and Pete Franceschi, played errorless ball and supplied the necessary punch at the plate when men were on base.
Another thing that is very pleasing to George is the ever-increasing number of local athletes that are staying in the city instead of going to out-of-town schools to play ball. Among some of the prominent home-town productions are Harry Mould, Keith Bridwell, Billy Russo, and Jim Tonge, all from Galileo; Barney Lahaderne, Vic Ramus, "Barney" Olfield, Sammy Johnstone, and Tank Hill from Poly; Lacey Abbey, Walt Pudoff, Pete "Crowd Pleaser" Franceschi from Mission; Armand Quartini of Balboa; Bill Telesmanic, and Bill Taylor, products of St. Ignatius; Bill Moore and Fred Buck, former Lowell performers. The cavalcade of stars is heading for the Hilltop. As time marches on, the parade should lengthen, giving Majordomo Malley more talent to send to the Hall of Fame (TheFoghorn).
