Born April 9, 1926 and raised in the Richmond district of San Francisco, John Hanley attended Saint Monica’s Grammar School and graduated from George Washington High School in 1944. He left high school early in his senior year at the age of 17 to fight in World War II. Jack served as a pharmacist mate aboard the USS Navel Ship Hilbert that earned 8 battle stars, fought at the Battles of Leyte Gulf, at Iwo Jima and at Okinawa. Hanley attended USF from 1946-1950 where he played basketball, with many other native San Franciscans, on the National Championship team coached by the great Pete Newell. Jack taught for the San Francisco School District for 34 years.
