The re-establishment of track at USF has tapped a reservoir of campus talent, promising development into a strong, competitive sport. Although hampered by a lack of depth, the sturdy cindermen completed a successful intercollegiate campaign under the capable coaching of Mr. John Fry.
The teams strongest spots were the sprint events, where standout Jiim Elliot was supported by Chuck Lacroix, Walt Pavlicek, and Glenn Potts. The middle distance duo of Mike Toole and Jim Wagele consistently finished out in front. Veteran Pete League, plus Tom Sweet, Rich School, and Ed Stoblet comprised a capable distance crew, while Mike Borzage and Michael Donohue led the way in the hurdles. Strength in all field events was shown by Jim Hansen, Steve Bingham, and Vic Walsh: pole-vaulters Vic Wendt, Mike Erlinger, Ron Conte, and Tom Wyatt; and high-jumpers Jim Elliott and Mike Donohue; weightmen Eli Kuala, and bob Rossi competed in the shot, discus and javelin (TheDon).
The Dons halfback. Phil Mooney, had his third straight great week as he bulldozed his way for 98 yards in 21 carries— a 4 plus yard average. The powerful senior now has gained 267 yards in three games. Not all the laurels went to the offense however. The defensive secondary limited the Quakers to 72 yards in the air and they picked off four George Fox passes, two each by Fred Schulz and Mike Donohue. It was Schulz who stole the thunder though. The junior defensive end rambled 40 yards for a touchdown with one of the thefts and also recovered a fumble.
Track and field is acknowledged as the most demanding of all college sports with reference to both time and energy involved, but surely this does not account for the almost total apathy displayed here at USF. Those who have participated did so with credit. Mike Donohue, a natural athlete with the dedication necessary to succeed, has been particularly outstanding. At Chico he was the long jumper with a leap of twenty-one feet six-and-a-quarter inches and will go a foot further as the season progresses. In addition he placed second in the high hurdles and high jump and fourth in the discus as well as running commendable legs in the 440 and one mile relay. Donohue will perform creditably in the AAU decathlon if he is encouraged to compete (TheFoghorn).
