The netters enjoyed their usual success in doubles, led by the strong play of the number three doubles squad of Bach and Melinda Schuetz. Bach-Schuetz took down Portland's tandem of Burnham/Taketa, 8-5, and white-washing SCU's sister duo of Hamilton-Hamilton, 8-0. The number one doubles squad of Basynat-Hewett fell to Portland's Duffy-Morrow, 4-8, but were able to edge by SCU's team of Ouchi-Sweeney, 10-9. The number two doubles team of senior Kate Beard and freshman Debi Dorfsman also split last week, defeating Portland's Lorwen-Swich, 8- 6, and falling to the Broncos' Barry-Reagan, 4-8.
Partially crippled by the loss of a key player, the Dons tennis squad dropped a WCC match against cross-bay rival Saint Mary's College by a 6-3 score on Tuesday. #3 singles player Debi Dorfsman was unavailable for singles play due to illness, but was able to participate in her doubles match. Kate Beard moved up to play #1 singles, while Sraddha Basnyat and team captain Rori Hewett moved down to #2 and #3 singles, respectively. Beard was bested by a 6-1, 6-1 score, while Basnyat was defeated 6-2, 6-0 and Hewett fell 6-0, 6-2. Melinda Schuetz lost by a 7-5, 6-2 score, as did Anne Navarro, 6-0, 6-1. Only Nancy Bach, playing at the #5 position, was able to triumph, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. In doubles play, the Basynat-Hewett combination lost by an 8-1 tally, but Schuetz-Bach prevailed 8-6, and Dorfsman-Beard won 8-5. The loss dropped the netters' record to 7-2-1 on the season (TheFoghorn).
