In the first inning of the first game at Edwards Field in Berkeley, the Hilltoppers showed no ill effects of a two- week layoff. Second baseman Don Russo picked off the first pitch of the game, smashing a double off the Bears' Bob Murray.

The Hilltoppers scored again in the third as Larry Jones opened with a walk, was bunted to second by Don Russo and scored on Bill Mustanich's line shot to center. Ron Dinslage made his first appearance on the mound for Benedetti. Dinslage came out to pitch the fifth inning, but he didn't last long. He gave up one hit, two walks, and one run in the one-third of an inning. Greg Sinclair came in to bail Dinslage out of trouble (TheFoghorn).
