Steve Berringer was born in San Rafael and attended USF and played baseball for the Dons from 1995-1996. He graduated in 1997 and returned for a Masters in Sports Development in 2010.  He became head baseball coach in 2000, and teaches in the Department of Kinesiology at College of Marin, Kentfield, CA.

Coach Berringer has proven himself to be one of the most successful coaches at the College of Marin. In 2001, his leadership landed the Mariners in second place in the Bay Valley West Conference. The Mariners have finished in first place in the Bay Valley Conference seven times (2006, 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018). On April 25, 2023, he had a special milestone in sight: his 500th career win, with 368 losses and and 5 ties with a .576 winning percentage.

His leadership and impact on players stretch far beyond the field. There have been over 150 Mariners who have transferred to 4-year institutions to continue their academic and athletic careers. Under Coach Berringer’s leadership, there have been 10 Mariners drafted into the MLB (3C2A,California Community College Athletic Association).

The wins saw complete games from Jeff Hrepich and Jason Warren, who struck out 15 batters and walked only two in the two games. Steve Berringer had five RBI's and four hits, while Quittner had five hits and Marshall had two home runs in the first two games to power USF.

Hardt and third baseman Steve Berringer picked up RBIs that inning, while Fegan and second baseman Phil Franks (in his first NCAA at-bat) drew bases-loaded walks, part of five free passes given out by LA's Doug DeLaGarza that inning. A two-run double by Fegan scored Hardt and Daryl Hernandez in the second, and the Hilltoppers tacked four more on the board in the fourth. Franks scored on an error, Hernandez singled Taclas home, Fegan drew another bases-loaded RBI walk, and Berringer grounded Hernandez home to make the score 11-3 after three innings (TheFoghorn).
