Alvin Brown was a graduate of Granada Hills High School, and played at the University of San Francisco. He began coaching in 1998, and in just his third year at Kilpatrick High School in Malibu, CA, Brown led the Mustangs to the Southern Section V-AA final, and the school's first Alpha League title ever. The Mustangs compiled a 27-3 record, losing only one game all year before the Southern Section final defeat to Calvary Chapel Downey.
