"But you can't expect a smooth working club after only a few weeks' work. These kids haven't worked together before, you know." Paced by big Bill Russell, the 6' 8" giant from Oakland's McClymond's High School, the Donlets have showed a marked improvement in this week's workouts. Also coming in for high praise are Hal Perry and Dan Powers at guards, Mario Veloso and Darol Smith at forwards and Fred Veloso, John DeMarchi, and Jack Abad in reserve roles. Bob Wiebush, forwards; Carl Lawson, Rich Mohr, Jack Cannon, Cappy Lavin and Phil Vukicievich, guards. The preceding men have virtually assured their positions by their stellar play during the practice sessions.
Woolpert had this to say: "In the pre-season workouts, the men sense their potential and guard spots have been capably handled by the diminutive Dan Powers, former St. Ignatius star, and Fred Veloso, twin brother of Mario Veloso."Â
Diminutive Dan Powers and Fred Veloso are slated to open at the guard spots for the Donlets. Powers at 5' 7" is the smallest man on the squad but makes up for his lack of height with his tremendous drive and hustle. He possesses an extremely accurate set shot. Veloso, Powers' running mate, has shown well in the pre-season workouts. He has a good two-hand set shot (TheFoghorn).
