The next Sunday, Ed Brown's arm windmilled the pigskin 359 yards through and over the Detroit defense. Twice he hit Merrill Peacock with arcs that had 60-yard chords on the ground. Down in Los Angeles, the season terminated sadly for eight senior gridders, and a host of juniors and sophs. This 28-40 decision left Roy Barni, Gene Sweeters, Dick Stanfel, Don Ramatici, Dolph Lubamersky, Art Alois, Ken White, and Gay Quandt with bitter memories of their last USF game.
On the wings for the Sweeters-men are Ed Dawson, Merrill Peacock, Ralph Thomas, and Bob Weibel. Peacock and Thomas both saw plenty of action last season, and Sweeters will be aiming many of his aerials at the glue fingered Peacock. Tackles built like mastodons will be prepared to crunch down the varsity ball carriers. Gene Barry stands 6' 3" and weighs in at a cool 250. Marv Bowerman 6' 7" and 230, Gene DeMartini, 6' 5", and 245, Mike Mergen,
6' 5" and 248, Don Moore, 5' 11" and 245, will be snorting at the line of scrimmage. The dubious distinction of handling the aforementioned will go to Gino Marchetti, Don Ramatici, and Lou Stephens. Ramatici is a 3-letter man.
Don Ramatici, Rich Stanfel, Ralph Thomas, Al Lubamersky, and Paul Ross were praised for stout defensive duty. And the coaches were, ensemble, so pleased with the versatility of Ed Brown, Hartnell College Kuharich: "Not bad, men" transfer, that some backfield switches may be made to get him into the running outfits made up of Ryan and Sweeters at the quarter-spots; Barni and Finney, fullbacks; and Matson, Braz, Hodor, or Sakowski, and Brown at the halves. This, especially, off the excellent showing of Sweeters at quarter (TheFoghorn).
