This particular match brought up the point of recruiting. Stanford, a school which has the ability and money to recruit extensively in every intercollegiate sport, seemed to overwhelm the Dons with a sense of professionalism and no trouble at all. Coach McGlynn mentioned that Tennis at USF had not reached the recruiting stage yet, but felt that it really wasn't necessary considering the schedule that the team has. Unless the team is struck with injuries, they should have no trouble with the rest of their opponents this year. This year's team, which has improved immensely since last season, includes such standouts as John Carpenter, Rich Williams, Steve Luchesi, Don Chadburn and Mike Lauderdale.
The University of San Francisco tennis team ended its season April 29th with a loss to Sacramento State. What had promised to be a successful season, ended with Coach McGlynn crying for help. Because of an injury to the Don's star player, Rich Williams, USF found itself hard - pressed to win any matches after mid-season. High point of the season was a great victory over the University of California at Davis. Led by Williams and John Carpenter, the Dons won a hard fought match on the Davis home court. Also assisting the team were George Chew, Bob Futernick and John Cervantes. Along with Greg Hunter and Leonard Schlazinger, these men will form the nucleus of what should be an improved team next year (TheFoghorn).
