This Hammond High (Class of 1947, Hammond, IN) and University of San Francisco (1951) basketball player was rarely sensational, but accomplished as an unselfish, team-minded performer. After his high school career under Coach Bob King, he headed west and contributed as a sophomore to the University of San Francisco’s 1949 NIT Championship-winning team, coached by legendary Pete Newell (HammondAthletics).
The big gun for this squad is Milan Metikosh, who plays on both units, switching from the guard spot on the slow unit to the center position on the speedy combo. Metikosh is a six-foot, 180-pounder from Hammond, Indiana, and Coach Bill sees for him a very favorable varsity career.
Against the small, but fast and alert Chinese Mission team, we saw our Frosh team operating almost flawlessly with rangy Milan Metikosh leading the way. Metikosh swished the net for 13 points, and was assisted by Bob Gardner and Dave Ahern, who scored 9 and 7 points respectively. A 58-26 win was a fitting climax of the fast game the Frosh boys played. The San Francisco State Junior Varsity met defeat as the USF youngsters chalked up another win. Metikosh and Healy divided scoring honors with eight digits apiece. Bob Gardner and Dave Ahern again played well, as did the whole squad. The 60 points bucketed by the Green and Gold yearlings was eventually distributed throughout the squad, and was a good indication of the teams' all around ability. It is evident that the Frosh casaba team is headed for a great season and should end up as one of the Coast's outstanding quintets. Coach Bill Gibson has made the most of an abundance of good material, which hails from many states (TheFoghorn).
