Senior golf star quits and aims for pros: Bill Schwallie joins Indian Valley staff; golf hopes dwindle Bill Schwallie, senior student at USF and last season's golf team captain, has joined the ranks of the pros. Schwallie took the position of assistant professional at the Indian Valley Golf Course last December. The lanky senior was noted on the Don Campus for the past three season as the Hilltoppers finest golfer. The 21 year old Business Administration student hails from Kailua, Hawaii. At Punahou High School in Honolulu, he was also a standout golfer and headed the squad for three years. In his senior year at Punahou, Schwallie took honors in the Hawaiian junior tourney and traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, to reach the finals of the regional tourney. Schwallie plans to go on with his professional endeavors upon his graduation in June.

Last Friday the Don Duffers were second bested by San Jose State in a three way meet. COP was the doormat of the tournament getting beaten by both USF 15-3 and SJS 18-0. Fighting the elements and the superior Spartans the Green and Gold top scores were as follows: Captain John Fry, 70; Bill Schwallie, 76; Dave Dillon. 79; Ron Avanzino, 80.

THIS SEASON'S edition of USF's golf team, termed "the best in years," will field six of the finest collegiate linksmen in this part of the state. They are senior Ron Avanzino, sophomore Bill Schwallie, junior Dave Dillon, and freshman Bob Johnson, Ken Charshaf and Ron Jacobs. All shoot consistently in the 70's and have had considerable playing experience. Fabulous Johnny Fry, mainstay of last season's squad, recently turned pro, and now is the team's "active" coach. Phil Woolpert, of basketball fame, is the official Coach. Ed Sleven and Ed Wagner will add team strength as alternates, in the absence of one or more of the first six. "Both show promise, and the outlook for a strong reserve is bright," Schawallie stated (TheFoghorn).
